GREENSPARK TRUCK FUEL COST CALCULATOR

Truck Fuel Cost Calculator

Getting started

How to Use the Truck Fuel Cost Calculator

  1. 1
    Select a diesel benchmark.

Choose the U.S. average or an EIA region. The displayed weekly price is editable; enter your actual diesel price if known.

  2. 2
    Enter total trip miles.

Include both loaded and deadhead miles in the total. Do not add deadhead twice.

  3. 3
    Enter Truck MPG.

Use your expected miles per gallon while loaded.

  4. 4
    Add deadhead miles if needed.

Empty MPG appears when deadhead is greater than zero. It initially follows Truck MPG unless you change it.

  5. 5
    Calculate and check the result.

Review the estimated total cost, gallons, and cost per driven mile. Use Calculation Breakdown for the math.

Price reference: The EIA average is a weekly benchmark, not a quote for your particular fill-up.

Calculation guide

How the Truck Fuel Cost Formula Works

Fuel consumption is calculated separately for loaded and empty miles, without rounding intermediate values.

Step 1Loaded miles = Total trip miles − Deadhead miles
Step 2Loaded gallons = Loaded miles ÷ Truck MPG
Step 3Empty gallons = Deadhead miles ÷ Empty MPG
Step 4Total gallons = Loaded gallons + Empty gallons
Step 5Fuel cost = Total gallons × Diesel price
Step 6Cost per driven mile = Fuel cost ÷ Total trip miles
Example: no deadhead900 miles ÷ 6.5 MPG × $6.199/gal = $858.32

The calculation retains full precision until the final money amount is rounded to cents.

Before relying on an estimate

How to Verify Your Truck Fuel Cost

  1. 1
    Check the benchmark.

Confirm the selected EIA region and reporting week. An older EIA observation may require confirmation.

  2. 2
    Check the actual pump price.

Use your expected diesel price after discounts when available instead of assuming the EIA average matches your purchase.

  3. 3
    Verify mileage.

Total trip miles already includes deadhead miles; confirm empty miles do not exceed the total.

  4. 4
    Confirm MPG.

Use realistic loaded and, when applicable, empty MPG values for your truck and trip.

  5. 5
    Review the breakdown.

Compare the gallons and total estimated fuel cost with your own trip planning assumptions.

Planning estimate only. Actual consumption depends on equipment, weight, terrain, traffic, and driving conditions.

Fuel costs are estimates. Actual diesel consumption, truck MPG, and pump prices may vary. Weekly diesel benchmark prices are sourced from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) and are reference averages, not actual fuel-purchase quotes.

TRUCK FUEL COST FORMULAS

How to Calculate Truck Fuel Cost

Total trip miles include both loaded and deadhead miles. Calculate diesel used for each type of driving at its corresponding MPG, then multiply the combined gallons by the diesel price. The calculator keeps full precision until the final cost is rounded to cents.

FUEL CONSUMPTION FORMULA

Total Gallons = Loaded MilesTruck MPG + Deadhead MilesEmpty MPG
Loaded Miles = Total Trip Miles − Deadhead Miles

FUEL COST FORMULA

Total Fuel Cost = Total Gallons × Diesel Price per Gallon
Cost per Driven Mile = Total Fuel CostTotal Trip Miles
Cost per Loaded Mile = Total Fuel CostLoaded Miles

Cost per loaded mile applies when there are loaded miles. Cost per driven mile uses all trip miles, including deadhead. A zero-mile trip has no cost-per-mile value.
