Stainless steel is dense, but freight class and handling vary widely between compact bars, flat sheets, coils, tubing, and bulky fabricated assemblies. Surface finish, edge condition, rust or contamination controls, load concentration, overlength pieces, and securement method are critical.

Stainless Steel Packaging, Stackability, and Damage Risk
Stainless Steel Packaging
- Use heavy timber skids, cradles, crates, blocking, steel strapping, and edge protectors sized for concentrated stainless steel weight.
- Separate polished or brushed surfaces with non-abrasive films, pads, or paper and avoid carbon-steel contamination.
- Chock coils, cap tube ends, protect sharp sheet edges, and keep all bars or fabricated parts within the skid footprint.
Stainless Steel Stackability
- Dense bar and plate bundles may stack only when skids transfer load through structural runners.
- Finished sheets, tubing racks, and polished fabricated parts should use limited stack height to avoid surface damage or bending.
- Treat coils, irregular weldments, tall frames, and assemblies with protruding nozzles, legs, or polished faces as non-stackable.
Stainless Steel Finish, Edge, Contamination, and Load Concentration Protection
- Prevent scratches, dents, bent edges, coil movement, banding marks, contamination, galling, and distortion of precision fabrications.
- Protect polished finishes, passivated surfaces, sanitary interiors, weld preparations, threaded connections, and dimensional tolerances.
- Document alloy grade, finish, dimensions, piece count, heat or lot numbers where needed, center of gravity, and lifting points.

How to Measure a Packaged Stainless Steel Shipment
- Measure after all skids, crates, cradles, blocking, edge guards, wraps, and bands are installed.
- Include coil cradles, bundle overhang, tube projections, crate feet, and lifting lugs.
- Use the total packaged weight of stainless steel, skid or crate, blocking, protective film, and securement.
Stainless Steel Freight Quote Checklist
- Measure the finished stainless-bar bundle, sheet skid, coil cradle, tubing rack, or fabricated-assembly crate.
- Record the total packaged weight, alloy grade, finish, dimensions, piece count, and package count.
- State whether the structural skid is top-load rated or the shipment must remain limited-stack because of coils, polished surfaces, tubing, or irregular fabrication.
- Include photos of polished faces, sheet edges, coil blocking, bands, tube ends, weldments, lifting points, and skid securement.
- Confirm forklift capacity, crane or rigging needs, overlength handling, contamination controls, appointment, and limited-stack requirements.
