DOT hazard class vs LTL freight class
A DOT hazard class describes the transportation hazard presented by a material. LTL freight class is a separate freight-classification system. A shipment identified as Class 3, Class 8, or another DOT hazard class does not automatically receive the same numbered LTL freight class.
DOT classification
Identifies the type of transportation hazard. The nine classes include explosives, gases, flammable liquids, flammable solids, oxidizers and organic peroxides, toxic and infectious substances, radioactive materials, corrosives, and miscellaneous hazardous materials.
LTL classification
Used for LTL freight classification and pricing. Density can be part of the class determination, while applicable commodity provisions and shipment characteristics may also affect final classification.
DOT hazard class ≠ LTL freight class.
Hazard classification reference
The U.S. Department of Transportation groups hazardous materials into nine hazard classes. Several classes are further divided into divisions.

Degree of danger
Packing groups indicate the degree of danger for hazardous materials when a packing group is assigned. Not every hazardous-material entry uses a packing group.
Packing Group I
Greatest degree of danger among the three packing groups.
Packing Group II
Medium degree of danger.
Packing Group III
Lowest degree of danger among the three packing groups.
Packing group does not determine LTL freight class.
Do not convert PG I, PG II, or PG III into a freight class number. Hazard classification, packing group, and LTL freight class answer different shipping questions.
Quote preparation
Hazmat shipments require information beyond dimensions and weight. Have the material description and shipment details available when requesting a carrier or broker quote.
Use the applicable hazardous-material shipping description.
Provide the assigned identification number where applicable.
Identify the DOT hazard class and division when applicable.
Include PG I, II, or III when a packing group is assigned.
Record the number and type of drums, cartons, containers, or other packages.
Provide total quantity plus the finished shipment dimensions and packaged weight used for freight planning.
Hazmat-specific shipment preparation
Hazardous materials must be offered in packaging authorized for the material and prepared in accordance with applicable hazardous-material regulations. These requirements are separate from calculating freight density.
Use packaging authorized for the material, including applicable specification, closure, filling-limit, and packing-group requirements.
Packaging materials must be compatible with their contents, and packages must be properly closed, cushioned, blocked, braced, and secured as required.
Required package markings, hazard labels, shipping papers, emergency-response information, and vehicle placards depend on the material and shipment.
