Two different classification systems
DOT Hazard Class 3 and LTL freight class are separate classifications. A Class 3 hazardous-material designation does not mean the shipment is LTL Freight Class 3.

Freight planning comparison
The product name alone does not determine a density-based freight class. Finished outside dimensions, pallet or overpack size, and total packaged weight can materially change pounds per cubic foot.

Same weight, different cube
The same 1,000 lb shipment can produce a different freight-class estimate if the finished package size changes. The examples below use the same 48 × 40 in pallet footprint and vary only the shipment height.

Only the finished height changed. Weight stayed at 1,000 lb and the pallet footprint at 48 × 40 in.
