What Is Freight Class 65?

Freight Class 65 is the density tier for qualifying packaged LTL shipments that measure 22.5 to under 30 lb/ft³ on the current 13-tier density scale. It sits between Class 60 at 30 to under 35 lb/ft³ and Class 70 at 15 to under 22.5 lb/ft³.

  • Meaning: a finished shipment whose density falls from 22.5 up to, but not including, 30 lb/ft³ can produce a Class 65 density-based estimate.
  • Boundaries: 30.00 lb/ft³ enters Class 60, while anything below 22.50 lb/ft³ moves into Class 70.
  • Not weight alone: freight density compares total packaged weight with the cubic space occupied by the finished handling unit.

How to Calculate Freight Class 65

Calculate the cubic feet of the finished handling unit, divide total packaged weight by that volume, then compare the density with the current class scale. A density from 22.5 to under 30 lb/ft³ produces a Class 65 density-based estimate.

Freight Class 65 Requirements

There is no single commodity checklist that automatically makes freight Class 65. For a density-based Class 65 estimate, the finished packaged shipment must measure 22.5 to under 30 lb/ft³, and the shipment still needs to be described and tendered under any applicable NMFC provisions.

  • Stay inside the Class 65 density band

    A density-based Class 65 estimate runs from 22.5 to under 30 lb/ft³. At 30.00 lb/ft³ the density tier moves to Class 60; below 22.5 lb/ft³ it moves to Class 70.

  • Watch pallet height on dense shipments

    Class 65 freight can carry substantial weight in a compact footprint. Extra height, overhang or oversized protection increases cubic volume and can pull a shipment toward the 22.5 lb/ft³ Class 70 boundary.

  • Include the full handling-unit weight

    Use the gross weight of everything shipping together, including the pallet, crate, containment, blocking and packaging. Missing that weight can distort the density calculation near either Class 65 breakpoint.

  • Confirm the commodity classification

    A calculated density of 22.5 to under 30 lb/ft³ can support a Class 65 estimate when a density-based provision applies, but the applicable commodity description and NMFC provisions still govern the final classification.

Freight Class 65 Packaging Requirements

There is no universal package style that guarantees Class 65. Package the freight for safe LTL handling, then measure the finished handling unit exactly as it will be tendered. Pallet footprint, crate dimensions, containment, banding, wrap and overhang all contribute to occupied cube.

  • Keep dense freight compact on the pallet

    Unused pallet footprint, unnecessary height, overhang and bulky protection can quickly reduce density. The page example is 48 × 40 × 36 in at 1,000 lb, or 25.00 lb/ft³; increasing the occupied cube can move that same weight toward Class 70.

  • Restrain the weight without adding unnecessary cube

    Class 65 shipments can place significant weight on a relatively small footprint. Use blocking, banding, containment or a suitably rated pallet to prevent movement while keeping protective materials within the finished dimensions needed for safe transport.

  • Avoid overhang on a standard pallet

    Even a few inches beyond the pallet edge increase the measured length or width and therefore the cubic volume used in the density calculation.

  • Recalculate after crating or containment changes

    At 48 × 40 × 36 in, the 1,000 lb example is 25.00 lb/ft³. Increasing the finished height to 48 in drops the same shipment to 18.75 lb/ft³, while reducing it to 30 in raises density to 30.00 lb/ft³ and enters Class 60.

Freight Class 65 Weight Limit

Freight Class 65 does not have one universal maximum shipment weight. Weight only determines Class 65 in relation to the cubic volume of the finished package.

Weight window for the 40.00 ft³ example

At a fixed volume of 40.00 ft³, Class 65 begins at 900 lb because 900 ÷ 40 = 22.50 lb/ft³. The shipment remains in the Class 65 density band from 900 lb up to, but not including, 1,200 lb. At 1,200 lb, density reaches 30.00 lb/ft³ and enters Class 60.

Change the package dimensions and the weight range changes with the cubic volume.

How to Avoid Reclassification and Billing Adjustments

Class 65 sits between exact density breakpoints at 22.50 and 30.00 lb/ft³, so small measurement or weight errors can move a shipment into a neighboring density tier.

  • Verify the 22.5 and 30.0 breakpoints after packaging

    Recalculate density from the final outside dimensions. A small change in height or overhang can push a shipment below 22.5 lb/ft³ into Class 70 or up to 30.0 lb/ft³ into Class 60.

  • Use a gross weight that matches the finished unit

    For the 40.00 ft³ example, 900 lb is exactly 22.50 lb/ft³ and 1,200 lb is exactly 30.00 lb/ft³. Missing pallet or packaging weight can therefore change the estimated tier.

  • Do not confuse Class 65 with an NMFC item number

    Class 65 is the density-based class result, not the commodity code. Confirm the applicable commodity description and provisions before tendering the shipment.

  • Recalculate whenever the handling unit changes

    A different pallet footprint, crate height, containment method or protective clearance changes cubic volume and can move a borderline shipment out of Class 65.

What Is the NMFC Code for Freight Class 65?

Freight Class 65 is not an NMFC item number. It is a freight class. The applicable NMFC item or commodity description depends on what is being shipped and the provisions that apply to that commodity.

If a density-based provision applies, a finished shipment density from 22.5 to under 30 lb/ft³ can correspond to Class 65. Always distinguish the freight class from the separate NMFC item number.

Is Freight Class 65 Hazmat?

No. Freight Class 65 by itself does not mean a shipment is hazardous material. Freight class and hazmat status answer different questions. Hazmat status depends on the actual material being shipped and the hazardous-material rules that apply to it.

A Class 65 density estimate does not remove any labeling, documentation, packaging or carrier requirements that may apply to a hazardous commodity.

Does FedEx Freight Use Class 65?

Class 65 can be used for an LTL shipment when the applicable rating and classification rules support that class. A density result of 22.5 to under 30 lb/ft³ is useful for estimating Class 65, but the carrier can still rely on the shipment description, applicable NMFC provisions, measurements, weight and other rating information.
