What Is Freight Class 85 in LTL Shipping?
Freight Class 85 is a density tier used for qualifying packaged LTL shipments that measure 12 to under 15 lb/ft³ on the current 13-tier freight density table. It sits between Class 70, which begins at 15 lb/ft³, and Class 92.5, which covers 10 to under 12 lb/ft³. In practical terms, Class 85 often describes moderately dense palletized freight that uses more trailer space per pound than Class 70 freight.
Meaning
Class 85 represents packaged freight with density from 12 up to, but not including, 15 lb/ft³.
Boundaries
15 lb/ft³ moves the density estimate into Class 70; from 10 to under 12 lb/ft³ it falls into Class 92.5.
No Fixed Weight
Class 85 is not defined by a single shipment weight. Density compares total packaged weight with the shipment's occupied cubic volume.

Calculate density from the finished outside dimensions and total packaged weight, then compare the result with the current density tiers.
Measure the finished outside dimensions
Use the greatest finished length, width, and height of the handling unit. Include the pallet, crate, wrap, overhang, guards, attachments, and other projections.

A Class 85 density result does not guarantee ordinary handling. Check total weight, stability, lift points, projections, restricted orientation, and whether standard dock equipment can safely move the finished unit.
Stowability
Regular, stackable handling units generally use trailer space more efficiently. Overhang, irregular shapes, non-stackable tops, or space restrictions can reduce stowability even when density falls squarely in Class 85.
Liability & Risk
Freight class and risk are not the same thing. Damage susceptibility, unusual value, hazardous characteristics, perishability, or the potential to damage adjacent freight can still affect the final classification.
Classification takeaway: A 12 to under 15 lb/ft³ density result supports a Class 85 estimate, but the finished shipment still needs to be evaluated under any applicable classification provisions.

What Is the NMFC Code for Freight Class 85?
Freight Class 85 is not an NMFC item number. An NMFC item number identifies a commodity or provision; Class 85 is a possible classification result for a qualifying shipment.
No universal code. Class 85 does not map to one NMFC item number.
Commodity-specific. NMFC items identify particular commodities and applicable provisions.
Shared result. Different shipment types can produce the same Class 85 density-based result.
Is Freight Class 85 Hazmat?
No. Freight Class 85 does not automatically mean a shipment is hazardous.
Freight class and hazmat are separate systems.
A Class 85 shipment can be hazardous or non-hazardous.
