What Is Freight Class 50 in LTL Shipping?

Freight Class 50 is the lowest-numbered freight class on the standard scale and is generally associated with very dense freight items. Under the current 13-tier freight density table , freight at 50 lb/ft³ or more falls into the Class 50 density tier. Think of freight that packs a lot of weight into a little trailer space. Dense metal parts, hardware, or other compact manufactured goods can sometimes fall within this density range, depending on the applicable NMFC provisions.

Meaning

Class 50 represents the highest-density tier in the current 13-tier density mapping.

Boundary

50 lb/ft³ is the boundary between the Class 55 and Class 50 density tiers.

No Weight Limit

Class 50 is not defined by a single shipment-weight limit. Density compares packaged weight with occupied cubic volume.

Calculate density from the finished packaged dimensions and total packaged weight, then compare the result with the current density tiers.

Use the greatest finished length, width, and height of the handling unit. Include the pallet, crate, wrap, overhang, guards, attachments, and other projections.

Freight Class for 55 Gallon Drum

A 55-gallon drum does not have one fixed freight class. Its class depends on the finished handling unit, total packaged weight, contents, density, and applicable NMFC provisions. Palletized drums can fall into different density tiers depending on how many drums are shipped together and how much space the complete package occupies.

Example: Four filled 55-gallon drums

Cubic feet: 48 × 48 × 40 ÷ 1,728 = 53.33 ft³

When could a 55-gallon drum shipment reach Class 50?

Under the current density scale, a qualifying drum shipment reaches the Class 50 density tier at 50 lb/ft³ or greater. A heavier or more compact finished handling unit can therefore produce a Class 50 density-based estimate, while the four-drum example shown here remains in Class 55 at 37.50 lb/ft³.

Pallet footprint, containment trays, banding, overhang, unused space, and other packaging can change the occupied cube. Commodity-specific NMFC provisions, handling characteristics, liability, and regulated-material requirements may also affect the final classification.

Why was this Class 50 example used?

  • Compact footprint: dense cartons of metal fasteners can create a regular palletized handling unit with relatively little unused volume.
  • Conventional handling: when properly unitized and within equipment limits, the pallet may be suitable for standard freight-handling equipment.
  • Durable product: steel fasteners provide an intuitive dense-industrial example, while final classification still depends on applicable commodity or NMFC provisions and other transportation characteristics.

Edge Case: A Small Change Can Flip the Density Tier

When a shipment sits directly on the 50 lb/ft³ boundary, even a small change in packaged weight or finished dimensions can move the density-based estimate between Class 50 and Class 55.

Density is an important classification input, but Class 50 freight still needs to be evaluated for handling, stowability, liability, and any applicable commodity or NMFC provisions.

Handling for Class 50

Dense Class 50 freight is often compact and compatible with normal dock-handling equipment, but density alone does not guarantee easy handling. Excessive weight, unusual dimensions, unstable packaging, restricted orientation, or projections can create additional handling concerns.

What to check

  • Can the finished handling unit be moved safely with standard forklifts or pallet jacks?
  • Is the load stable, accessible from normal fork-entry points, and free of projections that complicate handling?
  • Does the concentrated weight approach forklift, dock, trailer-floor, or other equipment limits?

Stowability for Class 50

Compact, regularly shaped freight can use trailer space efficiently, but very dense freight still requires careful placement. Excessive weight, inability to tier freight, irregular surfaces, protrusions, overhang, or restrictions on adjacent loading can create stowability concerns.

What to check

  • Can other freight be safely loaded beside or above the shipment?
  • Is the weight distributed appropriately across the trailer floor and axles?
  • Does the freight need blocking, bracing, strapping, or other securement to prevent movement?

Liability & Risk for Class 50

Class 50 does not automatically mean low liability. A dense shipment may be durable, but susceptibility to damage, the possibility of damaging adjacent freight, hazardous characteristics, perishability, unusual value, or other commodity-specific risks can still affect classification.

What to check

  • Could the freight itself be damaged during ordinary handling or transit?
  • Could its weight, packaging, or configuration damage surrounding freight?
  • Is it hazardous, perishable, unusually valuable, or otherwise subject to special provisions?

How to Avoid Reclassification and Billing Adjustments

Accurate finished measurements and documentation reduce avoidable classification disputes.

Near the Class 50 boundary: A shipment at or near 50 lb/ft³ can move into Class 55 if finished dimensions increase or packaged weight decreases.

  1. Measure finished dimensions — include overhang, projections, guards, and the tallest and widest points.

  2. Verify packaged weight — include the pallet, crate, wrap, and protective materials.

  3. Confirm the commodity description — use the applicable NMFC item and subprovision when required.

  4. Record handling characteristics — stackability, overhang, special handling, and handling-unit count.

  5. Keep supporting documentation — measurements and photographs of the freight as tendered.

  6. Recalculate after changes — packaging, pallet, dimension, or weight changes can alter density.

Carrier verification: These steps improve the shipment record but do not prevent inspection, reweighing, remeasurement, or classification review.

What Is the NMFC Code for Freight Class 50?

Freight Class 50 is not an NMFC item number. An NMFC item number identifies a commodity or provision; Class 50 is a possible classification result for a qualifying shipment.

No universal code. Class 50 does not map to one NMFC item number.

Commodity-specific. NMFC items identify particular commodities and applicable provisions.

Shared result. Different shipment types can produce the same Class 50 density-based result.

Is Freight Class 50 Hazmat?

No. Freight Class 50 does not automatically mean a shipment is hazardous.

Freight class and hazmat are separate systems.
