Chain Freight Class by Shipment Type
Chain is compact and dense, but shipment format changes handling. Boxed lengths, drums, reels, lifting assemblies, and long bundled chain require different containment, pallet support, corrosion protection, and forklift planning.

Large, irregular, non-stackable, unusually valuable, or specially handled chain shipments may need carrier review before booking.
Chain Packaging, Stackability, and Damage Risk
Chain Packaging
- Use steel drums, heavy bins, reinforced cartons, or crates rated for concentrated chain weight.
- Close and band containers so loose links cannot spill, roll, or shift during handling.
- Protect coated, plated, calibrated, or lifting chain from corrosion and metal-on-metal damage.
Chain Stackability
- Rigid drums, bins, and uniform reinforced cartons may be stackable within package ratings.
- Do not top-load soft cartons or open bundles that can deform or release chain.
- Long chain bundles require full-length support and limited-stack handling.
Chain Containment and Concentrated Weight
- Protect hooks, master links, load tags, calibrated links, and finished surfaces.
- Distribute dense chain evenly so pallet boards do not crack or bow.
- Confirm declared value and inspection requirements for certified lifting assemblies.

How to Measure a Packaged Chain Shipment
- Measure after drums, bins, cartons, banding, blocking, and skid supports are installed.
- Include bundle overhang, drum lids, crate framing, and protruding hooks or fittings.
- Use the combined weight of chain, containers, blocking, and pallet or skid materials.
Chain Freight Quote Checklist
- Measure the finished pallet, drum, bin, crate, bundle, or skid containing the chain.
- Record the total packaged weight of the complete chain shipment.
- State whether the chain containers and pallet can support safe top loading.
- Include photos of drum closures, banding, hooks, tags, overhang, and pallet support.
